Will you be the next Social Entrepreneur?
Last Friday, we had a speaker in our class. The speaker talked about Social Entrepreneur. It is to my advantage because I further learned what entrepreneurship is all about. Before, I never really knew or cared about entrepreneurship. But now, thanks to the speaker in our class, I clearly understand now what entrepreneurship is all about. And I could honestly say that I want to be an entrepreneur one day.
First, let’s discuss what entrepreneur is all about. An entrepreneur is a person who creates something new and different, changes/treasures values, creator of wealth, innovative, and so forth. We can fairly say that inventors are entrepreneurs. For example, the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright invented the airplane and that was really a big invention. It is possible that without them, no one could have invented the airplane that the world uses today to transport people from one country to another.
It is discussed by the speaker that here in the Philippines, the greatest need for our country today are entrepreneurs. In our country today, there are only a few entrepreneurs that is why we need more. If we had more entrepreneurs, maybe the Philippines wouldn’t be experiencing hardship or at least less hardship compared to now. So, it is really better if we would have more entrepreneurs here in our country.
It is interesting to take note that thee are two types of entrepreneurs. The first type is the Profit type – These people are people who enter business or become an entrepreneur to earn profit out of their business. To them, profit is the main reason why they are doing business. Without profit, it is useless for them to even do business in the first place. The second type is the Social Entrepreneur – These people are different from the Profit types because profit is not their main reason why they entered into business. For them, it is more about contributing to the world and helping people regardless of how much profit they earn. Even if they get no profit, they’d still conduct business just for the sake of helping and contributing, which is kind of good. But to be honest, I am the Profit Type Entrepreneur.
The speaker also interestingly discussed to us the mental modes of people. Mental modes are deeply ingrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures or image that influence how we understand the world and how we take action. Very often, we are not aware of our mental modes or the effects they have on our behavior. Mental Mode is how we see the world. The only thing is, a mental mode imprisons us from doing more things. For example, if you are a person afraid of heights, then that will keep you imprisoned unless you overcome your fear.
Overall, it was a very interesting seminar and I really did learn a lot from it and I presume that my block mates did as well.
